Do Hashtags Get More Views on IGTV?

As I mentioned in my last post, I am going to be experimenting with Instagram TV, and trying to figure out what it’s all about. I think that I’m kind of in a perfect position to see what works, as my account doesn’t have all that many followers, so I won’t be getting any views based off of that. If you can get views of IGTV without having hardly any followers, I’ll discover it. If not, I’ll continue to fail to get any of my videos viewed by a large audience. One of the most obvious questions that I had was, does hashtagging your videos work to gain viewers? That’s what I’ve been playing with over the past few days and here is what I found.

Do Hashtags Work to Get Views on Instagram TV?

As of posting, nope. What hashtags do on IGTV videos, is to get your video auto-liked by those accounts that give out likes anytime a particular hashtag is used.

I put up two videos one with hashtags and one without. The one with hashtags didn’t get any more views. In fact, it still has fewer views than the video that I hashtagged to the gills.

I then went back and hashtagged the video that I had put up without them. Again, it got me auto-likes, but no extra views came about from this tagging.

There still isn’t a proper search function on Instagram TV. You can search by channel name and description somewhat. However, you cannot search it by topic of what you want to watch. I am thinking that you’ll be able to do this in the future, which is why posting videos makes sense right now, even if you don’t have all that many followers.

Hashtags do still work decently in regular videos that I’ve posted on my Instagram page. It’s still hit and miss as to which videos get seen by people who don’t follow you. For example, I random clip I put up over the weekend got 250 views within a two day period versus one that has only 41 views, that I posted over a month ago.

Is it worth using hashtags on your IGTV videos?

I mean, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. As of right now, it has no real useful functionality. Again though, the platform is still super new, and who really knows what it will look like a year or more from now.

Personally, I’m still going to hashtag the videos for the foreseeable future, and if they come into play…great. If not, it’s not really too much of a problem to copy and paste some tags into a video clip.

Hell, I think it’s more irritating to reformat older videos for IGTV. As such, hashtagging posts isn’t much of a bother to me. Either way, using hashtags doesn’t appear to be doing anything for IGTV users, at the moment.
